Camping Activities for Couples

Camping is something that should be shared with your significant other because it allows for the distractions of technology to be cast aside and in order to get the most out of your camping trip, it is best to bring awareness to the different camping activities for couples..  Being in nature makes for the perfect escape to spend quality time together.  No more wasted time spent in front of the TV not saying a word.  Instead, you will be in the outdoors, which will allow for you to communicate and share in activities that you both enjoy.

Camping Activities to Do at the Campground

  1. Hiking

I cannot stress enough how much my girlfriend and I love to share in the experience of hiking together. The slow pace allows for conversation and a time to really rejoice in nature.  As you are hiking you will have time to admire the little things.  You will be sharing silence or conversation with your partner, which allows for you to share a deeper connection.

  1. Snowshoeing

During the winter months, you should not feel confined to your campsite. Get out and go snowshoeing. While my girlfriend and I were in the Rocky Mountains National Park in Colorado, we went snowshoeing. It was the most surreal activity we did as a couple. It was a new experience for the both of use that was a challenge and created the most serene memory.  The park was nearly vacant due to not a lot of people taking advantage of the winter weather.  The snow glistened in the sun and appeared untouched due to the snow still falling.  It created an experience that just the two of us shared without any distractions.

  1. Swimming

swimmingCamping in the summer months can create tensions to be high between couples because not everyone enjoys the smoldering heat with no escape. This is why swimming is a great option, it decreases the strain.

Even if it is during the winter months, find a trail that offers a route to a hot spring. They tend to be popular areas but if you go early in the morning it makes for an exclusive retreat.

Some campgrounds offer a river within in it for easy access to swimming or you could just lay in a tube. This makes for a refreshing break from the heat, allowing for couples to rejoice together in the cool, revitalizing water.

  1. Fishing

This is an activity that my girlfriend loves, which is why we try to incorporate it into each camping trip we do together. Even though I do not fish, I enjoy the sound of the babbling brook and peaceful environment.

  1. Mountain Biking

mountain bikingCheck to see if your campground offers trails within your campground. If it does, it will allow for you and your significant other to enjoy the outdoors on remote trails.

I tend to get a little competitive and am an avid cycler, so for me and my girlfriend this doesn’t always turn out to be an enjoyable experience. Due to my girlfriend wanting to cycle at a slower pace.  That is why it is important to make sure as a couple you match your interests to the activity you choose.

  1. Geocaching

This is an outdoor recreational activity that creates an exciting and team building challenge for couples to enjoy. You would use the GPS on your mobile device to find the marked locations of the “geocache”.  The marked locations are identified by exact coordinates.

You will be searching for the “geocache”, which is a hide and seek container. It could either have a log book and pen inside, which you would then mark your name into.  Or it could contain an item(s) that the person before you placed into the container.  Once you find the container, you would then place it back where you found it by letting the items remain within it or by replacing the items with a token that represents you.

  1. Photography

photographyPhotography is an art that can be taken seriously or can be something to experiment with casually. Either way, it creates an amazing experience to do together.  I prefer to experiment with photography while on camping trips.  This allows it to become a fun experience.

If you don’t have an actual camera, bring your phone or disposable cameras. Then afterward you can compare photos together and one of you may have captured a moment you both can remember for days to come.

  1. Caverns

Depending on your locations, you may be able to explore caverns within your campground.

Camping Activities to Do at the Campsite

When you are choosing a location for your campsite follow these tips to ensure a romantic location.

  1. As you choose an area for your campsite make sure it is in a remote location. This means you will be looking for campsites on the perimeter of the campground.
  1. Look for a scenic spot in the campground. If there is mountains or water within the campground or surrounding it, try to find a campsite that is nearby.

Make sure you book the campsite at least a month before you go to ensure you have a quality spot.

Romantic Camping Activities for Couples

Now we will get into the activities for couples to do that revolve around time spent at the campsite.  Since this will be the area that you will have the most time to be alone with your partner, it makes for a perfect opportunity to create a romantic atmosphere.  Here are some activities to create an outdoor oasis.

  1. Star Gaze

Star gazing is a great way to spend time together in the outdoors. This will give you an opportunity to learn about the constellations and it can become a source of entertainment.  You could even challenge one another to see who finds the constellation first.

This website will give you a map to help you locate the constellations based on your location and day you will be on your trip.

  1. Cook Together

cook togetherEven though you are outdoors, this doesn’t mean you cannot cook an amazing meal together. Make sure to bring ingredients for a meal that you both have never cooked before and challenge yourself to make it over the campfire.  This will make for a great opportunity to work together and share quality time.

Instead of cooking a whole meal, you could opt for creating the most unique s’more. A favorite s’more that my girlfriend and I enjoy are a Reece’s Cups s’more because it appeases our sweet tooth.  The only ingredients needed are two packs of Reese’s Cups and marshmallows.

  1. Listen to Music

listen to musicAn easy way to create a romantic atmosphere is to listen to music created by one another for one another. What I mean by this is you could each create a playlist that embodies the other person, this will allow you to each express your creativity by using music.

My girlfriend and I bring a Bluetooth speaker that is wireless. This allows for the capability to be easily used while camping.  It also makes it easy for us to play music that is saved on our phones.

  1. Read

readingI understand this may sound boring to some. However, I really enjoy reading and when I get to partake in that activity with my girlfriend, it allows for me to share my interests with him.

A great place to read together is in a hammock that fits two. It creates a cozy place to cuddle up with your significant other and enjoy some quite time together.

  1. Practicing Gratitude

When you are out in nature it makes for a great time to reflect on the things you are grateful for, since you are not distracted by your everyday busy life. Starting off your days together by saying five things you are grateful for starts the day off on a positive note.

It will also allow for you to feel closer to your significant other because most likely one of the items on each other’s list will be the other person. This can then create a conversation over the things that were listed.

Camping Activities to Do in Tent

  1. Cards or Board Games

Once it starts to get dark out and you are retreating to the tent, it doesn’t mean the fun needs to stop.  You could play cards or a board game that you both enjoy.

To make it easier to see, I bring a portable lantern that hangs from the top of the tent.

  1. Reading

Some people find it useful to read before bed to help ease into sleep, so if this is something you both enjoy it makes for a restful night time activity.

  1. Notepad and Pen

Simple supplies will allow for you to play hang man, tic-tac-toe, or any other childhood game that you will like.

  1. Cuddling

You will already be cozy in a tent so why not take it up a notch and bring compatible sleeping bags that zip together.  Allowing for you both to lay together.  Another way to go about this is bringing a large enough blanket for two and using that as the top blanket.

Camping Activities to Do Off Site

  1. Canoeing

canoeingSome areas near campgrounds offer rentals, which allow for a more private trip down the river.  Or you could go with a tour group.  Either way, it will create an awesome experience.

The first time I went canoeing with my partner, it was a hysterical adventure.  We both were not familiar with how to use the oars and which way to paddle, which led to a lot of collisions with trees and the bank of the river.  Even though we were terrible at first it created a lot of laughs and we unknowingly worked on communication along the way.

  1. Spelunking

This activity is exploring the wild cave system.  And will need to be done with a guide.  It creates a unique experience and you will both become explorers for the day.

  1. Tubing

Tubing will create a relaxing day for you both.  Allowing for you to be outdoors and appreciate the refreshing water.

My experience with tubing was a joyous one.  My girlfriend and I paid for limitless tubing, which took place in Little River in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.  The river had little rapids in it, which allowed for an adrenaline rush along with a relaxing floating experience.  The activity ended up taking up a whole afternoon.

  1. Zip Lining

An adventurous activity to do together is zip lining.  It creates a fast pace activity of you zipping past trees while feelings the gusts of wind across your face.

  1. Horseback Riding

Riding horses creates a pleasant activity that you both will appreciate.  Animal lovers will find this to be a spectacular activity that combines their passion for animals and the outdoors.

  1. White Water Rafting

Adrenaline junkies would be elated by this activity.  The rush of the crashing rapids against the raft not only makes it hard to stay in, but creates excitement in pushing yourself to make it through the trip without falling out.
